Getting Your MFA Creative Writing Degree

The acronym MFA stands for Master of Fine Arts and is a type of degree some writers may want or need to have based on their career goals. A creative writing master degree can open many doors that were previously closed. For example, this type of degree could get you into a renowned university, teaching creative writing to students. If you want to work for a publishing house or magazine, a masters creative writing degree will help rather than hurt your chances for sure. There are a diverse number of careers that can be filled by those who possess a Master of Fine Arts degree.

One example of a graduate MFA creative writing program is offered by New York University. This particular program is designed to have a community feel. It helps writers live writing along with learning it. There are outreach programs and several renowned reading series. Also you will experience once in a lifetime seminars with master authors. Also part of the program is the creation of a literary journal. Students in this program not only write, but also learn about teaching, publishing and even reaching out to their communities. You are not pigeon holed into just writing for the rest of your life, you can help other writers realize their dreams as well.

This is by far not the only MFA programs creative writing students can pursue. There are many others, at schools around the world. You can even spend time abroad honing your craft while learning about foreign literature. One thing is for sure, a graduate creative writing program is not for anyone who has doubts about their career path. These programs are for individuals who know they want to enter a creative writing related profession, whether it is as a teacher or an author. The graduate schooling is very extensive and best suited to highly dedicated writing students.

Obtaining an MFA creative writing degree, for those who live and breathe writing, is worth every minute of effort and every penny of tuition paid. Speaking of tuition, there are many different financial aid programs from the government and alternate sources that can help you foot the bill. This applies to both undergraduate and graduate students. Earning your Master's can be a long journey when you look at it from the beginning, but once you get there you will realize how much you learned, and how glad you were that you took the journey.
